Media Literacy Education at Serdang State Elementary School 01 and 03, Central Jakarta

More than 700 students from Serdang State Elementary School 01 and 03 participated in the Media Literacy Education program attended by students in 1st grade to 6th grade. There were 2 sessions during the entire event, one for students in 1st grade to 3rd grade and the other for students in 4th grade to 6th grade.

Apart from counseling, there were also activities in Mobil Weli (BookMobile) guided by Kak Dian and Kak Suradi where students would read books, tell stories, sing, play games, and many more.

On behalf of the school, Vice Principal of State Elementary School 03,  Widhya Ridhowati, and Principal of State Elementary School 01,  Ida Handini, expressed their gratitude on behalf of the school for the activities, believing it to be very useful in fostering wisdom when interacting with technology and social media. Most elementary school students are active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and so on. Unsupervised and uninformed interactions within these platforms put the students at risk of negative exposure, which may be detrimental to their growth on development, thus the importance of this Media Literacy Education program.

The program continued its efforts in fostering a fondness for reading while simultaneously providing insight on using social media wisely through sessions led by Kak Ningnong/Ms. Ning and Kak Sisca. They emphasized on the informed use of social media and the importance of reading, following the idea of Generation Z as the “Visual Generation”.

The program also included a lesson on symbols and signs found in shows, namely age restrictions, prohibitions, and other symbols found on social media. This was done in order for children to be able to identify the content they are allowed to consume according to their age.

Student representatives have expressed their excitement and enthusiasm in participating in the activities. They have also stated that the lessons helped increase their understanding of social media and how to properly interact with it.
