Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih Foundation has collaborated with the Association of Ophthalmologists (PERDAMI) and the Kediri City Army Health Service Hospital to hold the Cataract Surgery Social Service program on March 18, 2023.
Following the theme "Behold the Wonderful World", the cataract surgeries started at 08.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m. WIB. The program successfully operated on 87 patients, one of them being Samsiyah (69), a resident of Maron Village, Banyakan District, Kediri Regency. Samsiyah has had cataracts for 14 years and was overjoyed by the chance to regain his vision once again through the surgery. She thanked YPP SCTV Indosiar for the opportunity.
These cataract surgeries were supported by 6 surgeons, 4 members of PPDS, and 12 assistant surgeons. According to Dr. dr. Arti Lukitasari, Spm from PERDAMI East Java, the causes of cataracts are either age or direct exposure to sunlight—a common cause of cataract in Indonesia due to the country’s tropical climate. Cataracts cannot be prevented, as it is a degenerative process where a decline in function happens due to age. Blindness is often a result of cataracts. However, with the presence of cataract surgery, such impairment can be prevented.
