Media Literacy Education at Ciheuleut State Elementary School 01 and 02

YPP held a Media Literacy Education program in Ciheuleut 01 and 02, with students from 1st grade to 6th grade of elementary school participating in the program. The activities were divided into 2 sessions, the first session for children in 1st grade to 3rd grade, and the second session for children in 4th grade to 6th grade. To open the event, the students prepared a pencak silat performance.

Aside from the Media Literacy Education sessions, a Weli Car (BookMobile) was also present, with activities guided by Ms. Ratih where children could read books, watch movies, etc.

The Principal of Ciheuleut State Elementary School 01,  Gunawan, and the Principal of Ciheuleut State Elementary School 02,  Puji Sugiarto, expressed their gratitude on behalf of the school for the activities, believing it to be very useful in improving accreditation, arousing interest in reading, building character, and fostering wisdom when interacting with technology and social media. Most elementary school students are active on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and so on. Unsupervised and uninformed interactions within these platforms put the students at risk of negative exposure, which may be detrimental to their growth on development, thus the importance of this Media Literacy Education program.

The program continued its efforts in fostering a fondness for reading while simultaneously providing insight on using social media wisely through sessions led by Kak Ningnong/Ms. Ning and Kak Sisca. They emphasized on the informed use of social media and the importance of reading, following the idea of Generation Z as the “Visual Generation”.

The program also included a lesson on symbols and signs found in shows, namely age restrictions, prohibitions, and other symbols found on social media. This was done in order for children to be able to identify the content they are allowed to consume according to their age.

Student representative from Ciheuleut State Elementary School 02, Muhammad Riski Permana, and student representative from Ciheuleut State Elementary School 01, Nazwa Azahra, expressed their excitement and enthusiasm in participating in the activities. They have also stated that the lessons helped increase their understanding of social media and how to properly interact with it.
