Media Literacy Education at Bintang Kejora Catholic Elementary and Middle School, Cengkareng

On December 7 2023, Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih Foundation SCTV Indosiar (YPP) together with the Indonesian Television Academy (ATVI) held the Media Literacy Education program attended by 350 students, consisting of elementary school students in 1st grade to 6th grade, junior high school students in 1st grade to 3rd grade, and 50 high school students. The event was divided into 2 sessions, one for elementary school students and the other one for middle school and high school students.

Additional materials in the form of group assignments and presentations were assigned specifically for middle school and high school students.

The event was interspersed with performances by elementary and middle school students, as well as Christmas songs accompanied by playing the angklung and dancing.

Apart from the lessons, there were also activities in the Weli Car, otherwise known as the Wahana Edukasi Keliling (Mobile Education Vehicle) / BookMobile.

Sr. Hetwika and  Siska, as representatives of the school, conveyed their appreciation for YPP and ATVI’s efforts in organizing Media Literacy Education. They highlighted its positive influence on the students’ enthusiasm for reading and learning, along with its effectiveness in shaping responsible use of technology and social media.

The program continued its efforts in fostering a fondness for reading while simultaneously providing insight on using social media wisely through sessions led by Kak Ningnong/Ms. Ning and Kak Sisca. They emphasized on the informed use of social media and the importance of reading, following the idea of Generation Z as the “Visual Generation”. Encouraging children to read is important, as reading is akin to that of performing exercises for the brain, leading to an increase in creativity and knowledge.

The program also included a lesson on symbols and signs found in shows, namely age restrictions, prohibitions, and other symbols found on social media. This was done in order for children to be able to identify the content they are allowed to consume according to their age.

The school’s student representatives have also shown appreciation for the activities held at their school, not only for the practical benefits, but also for the fun activities they were provided with.
